Eliot, T[homas] S[tearns]. TLS on Faber and Faber Letterhead.

$1,850.00

January 29, 1962. Eliot declines an invitation from Spoken Arts, a leading phonograph recordings publisher, to read from his works. "I am sorry that your interesting proposal does not commend itself to me. I wish recordings of my plays to be made in entirety, and to be made by the cast of an actual stage production approved by myself. There are excellent recordings of MURDER IN THE CATHEDRAL and THE COCKTAIL PARTY. The first was made by the Old Vic Company in London; the second by the cast of the play as presented in New York, and directed by Martin Browne. These records are available for college students as well as the published texts of the plays." A polite but vehement articulation of the poet's artistic sensibilities, expressed in no uncertain terms. Fine.
