Affixed to the front pastedown is a printed label on a Boston University professor's stationery that has been signed by Saul Bellow who taught there for a time. "The Ghost Writer" is a Roman a Clef in which Roth satirizes Bernard Malamud and Bellow. Despite having broken off social relations with Roth, Bellow apparently valued the novel enough so that this copy remained in his possession fourteen years after the book's publication.
