Davie, Donald. TLS to Fellow Poet and Translator of the Classics, Peter Whigham.

$750.00

January 18, 1984. Writing on Vanderbilt University letterhead, where he was a visiting professor, Davie launches into specific critical praise of Whigham's work: "As I apprehend the matter, you have staked all of Dante's terseness, his rapidity, and for the sake of that will to violence to the syntax of current English ... What a pleasure to hear English verse rendered with crispness."

Davie goes on to say that he recommended Whigham for a Guggenheim Grant. Some 600 articulate and unified words. Fine.
