[ca.1938]. Miller has crossed out the original title in ink and penned a new one: "The Brooklyn Bridge." He has also written in the margins "Original version -- Since revised!! For David Edgar. En Souvenir de notre amitie terrestre, conjugal, austere, et. cetera. Henry." With the author's holograph emendations throughout. Miller elsewhere described Edgar, who was a fellow expatriate printer / writer as "my best friend in Paris."

   The above essay's text can be seen as no less than Miller's view of life at that time and was published by James Laughlin's New Directions in The Cosmological Eye (1939). A collation of the two texts reveals that Miller rewrote much of it for book publication. For example the first two paragraphs of the typescript, some 225 words, do not appear in the book. Other sections have been relocated as Miller's free-form flights of imagination and ideation spill out into lucid expressions in which the author views the world -- HIS view, that is.
